Holiday Valley Resort - The Snow Machine is on!

Holiday Valley Resort reported on November 9, 2017 that the snow operations crew fired up the snowguns to kickoff the 2017-18 winter season. According to the Holiday Valley website, Steve Crowley, Director of Mountain Operations stated, “With Friday’s predicted low temperatures in the teens and highs only in the low 20’s, it’s the perfect scenario to start up our snowmaking system. We look for at least a 24 hour period of cold and we expect to be able to make snow starting Friday morning and possibly into Saturday.”
The Holiday Valley Website stated that they are "taking advantage of their automated snowmaking system, the Holiday Valley crew will be able to run snowguns on five or more slopes – Yodeler, Mardi Gras, School Haus, Punch Bowl and Cindy’s. In addition, they will be test firing the new automated guns that were installed this summer on several other slopes. The advantage of an automated snowmaking system where the guns are computer controlled in a central location is that the guns can fire up all at the same time, without having to manually travel to each location to turn them on or off. The system is also energy efficient and able to adapt to changes in temperature and humidity. "

Sunday is expected to turn warmer, "so the resort will create mounds of manmade snow this week to preserve them until snowmaking can restart with the next cold snap. Holiday Valley plans to open on Friday, November 24, weather permitting. Ideally Mother Nature will contribute to the effort, but Crowley estimates they’ll need to build up about a 12 inch base of manmade snow on the slopes."

Stay tuned as mother nature and Holiday Valley do their best to kickoff the 2017-18 ski season!

Get your skis on for Ellicottville, New York! Mother Nature gave us a Valentine's Day gift!

The 2015 / 2016 ski season in Ellicottville, New York got off to slow start with the El Nino winter conditions. The December 2015 skiing was virtually non existent, unless you had wheels on your skis! Thankfully mother nature came through with several lake effect snow storms and some big clippers during the month of February. She showed us her love with the best Valentine's Day gift ever, SNOW! Snowfall overnight on February 15, 2016 was close to 8 inches and it is still falling. More snow is predicted the remainder of the week!

Holiday Valley, HoliMont and Kissingbridge all have good ski conditions. The mountain crews are working hard to keep trails and slopes open. They have been busy keeping them groomed when the snow arrives and conditions exist to make snow. As of February 16, 2016, the ski resorts have the following snow bases:

Holiday Valley Resort          16" - 49" base and 55 trails open
HoliMont Ski Resort            12"-36" base and 50 trails open
Kissingbridge Ski Resort     5" - 35" base and 35 trains open

This is a great time to get out and enjoy the good ski conditions during this shortened ski season from the El Nino weather effect. Take a trip to Ellicottville and give thanks to mother nature for this Valentine's Day gift!

Good News! The snow guns have been blasting away and Mother Nature is helping out with all this beautiful lake effect snow! It’s like being in a snow globe with the snow on and off all week and still going! Our Central Area will have Holly, Twister, Coal Chute, Candy Cane (beginner hill) and the Mini Terrain Park open all freshly groomed.  Our Snow Magicians are working vigorously as the temperatures have dropped this week and the magic is continuing on Twister, Coal Chute and various other slopes and over to the North Area. And plans to open our South Area tomorrow!!

Make sure you make it out here Saturday January 16th for our Beach Party in the Lake Effect Saloon, with BLACK WIDOW here to rock the place out from 8pm-12 MIDNIGHT!

GREAT LAKES BREWERY

The Great Lakes Brewery was founded in 1988 in Cleveland, Ohio. Patrick and Danial Conway started a new era in brewing beer in Cleveland, after the last of 30 breweries (since 1870) closed in the early 1980s. The brewery was the first micro-brewery in the state of Ohio. They are committed to crafting fresh, flavorful, high-quality beer and food for the enjoyment of their customers. Their beer is sold in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., West Virginia and Wisconsin through local liquor stores and national retailers. They brew beers and ales year round, including season beers. Their beers have won at the World Beer Championships and other events. Dortmunder won the GOLD Medal at the World Beer Championships in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. That is why it is Dortmunder Gold! Year-round - Burning River Pale Ale, Commodore Perry IPA, Dortmunder Gold Lager, Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, Eliot Ness Amber Lager, The Wright Pils (Brewery store exclusve).

Seasonal - Conway's Irish Ale, The Doppelrock (malty doppelbock), Holy Moses White Ale, Lake Erie Monster (unfiltered IPA), Oktoberfest, Nosferatu (hopped imperial red ale), Christmas Ale (a honey ale and spiced with ginger and cinnamon) and Blackout Stout.

We Recommend - Our year round favorite is the Dortmunder Gold. It has good flavor and body and always satisfies. During the holidays, the Christmas ale is a must. It is hard to find so get it when you can. It has a nice spiced full flavor and has a slightly higher alcohol content.Their Oktoberfest is also on our list and is a caramel color with great flavor this variety of beer, which is a plus. The Oktoberfest is not bitter and definitely delivers.

All of their beers and ales are hand crafted and have great flavor. The Christmas Ale goes fast during the winter holidays and can be hard to find. It is a must try for any beer connoisseur.

ELLICOTTVILLE BREWING COMPANY
The Ellicottville Brewing company was established in 1995 in Ellicottville, New York. The brewery was founded by some folks that wanted to start a family business and the inspiration was conceived after a ski trip to Vail, Colorado. We Recommend - We recommend their German Stein Beer, Hop Bomb and Blueberry Wheat. A three have different flavors that are exceptional for their respective categories. If you visit the brewery, they serve the golden colored Blueberry wheat with fresh blueberrys floating in the glass. The Ultra Pale Ale is a great summer beer that is light in color, a little taste of hops and smooth finish.

The area has proven results at wine compettions and draws thousands of people year round to the wineries in Chatauqua area, Finger Lakes area and more. The regions' wines are shipped all over the world. We reviewed a few wineries for this article and we hope that you enjoy their wines at an event at their wineries in the near future.

THE WINERY OF ELLICOTTVILLE

The Winery of Ellicottville was founded in 2010 Dominic Francesco and is located in downtown Ellicottivlle, NY. The winey was inspired by Francesco Spicola (Dominic’s Father). Together they create the wines with the careful consideration that Francesco used, combined with new world techniques that produce the Winery of Ellicottville’s award winning wines.

The Winery of Ellicottville makes a fantastic Traminette, and we highly recommend it. They also produce a fine Reisling, Pino Grigio, Chardonnay and a Vidal. If you are feeling festive, they also offer three wines the EVL Red, EVL White and EVL Blue. If you like sweeter wines, there Snow Fox has been recommended from friends, which is made from a Niagara grape. If Reds are your flavor, they have a nice Merlot with dark cherry and black raspberry tones and a Syarah with a little spice.
We Recommend - The Traminette. Is is has a great nose and little bit of spice and a nice finish. The Snow Fox is recommended for the sweeter palate!

Ellicottville NY Fall Festival 2014 - Prost to the Oktoberfest!

Celebrate the fabulous tastes, colors and sounds of fall at the 2014 Ellicottville, NY Fall Festival. The annual event, also known as the Oktoberfest, takes place on October 10, 11, and 12 2014. It is the oldest and largest Festival in Ellicottville and for good reason; the fall color is at its peak. Over 10,000 annual festival goers make for a fun weekend of unique foods, Arts show, Crafts show, curb market, carnival rides, live entertainment, mountain bike race, a 5K, chair lift rides and much more. And what would and  Oktoberfest festival be without plenty of good beer and wine; which are made in town at the Ellicottville Brewing Company, John Harvards Brewhouse and the Ellicottville Winery. In addition to all of the events, many of the local restaurants and shops have sales and special items throughout the weekend. It is well worth the trip with all of the activity and fun planned over the 2014 Ellicottville Oktoberfest weekend.

Oktoberfest is an annual German fall festival that is usually celebrated the 3rd or 4th weekend in September. The Oktoberfest tradition began in 1810 celebrating the October 12th marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. The citizens of Munich, Germany were invited to join in the five days of festivities celebrating the marriage, which were held on the fields in front of the city gates. A hours race was the main event of this original Oktoberfest. Since its Bavarian origins in 1810, the Oktoberfest has changed substantially. The horse races were last held in 1960, and the agricultural show is put on only every four years. The Oktoberfest event still takes place on the "Theresienwiese" ("Theresa's meadow"), which was named after the new bride; to the locals, it's simply known as "Wies'n". During the two weeks before the first Sunday in October, these fairgrounds are transformed into a city of beer tents, amusements, rides, performers, and booths of vendors peddling traditional foods and traditional confections. The mayor of Munich opens the festivities at noon on the first day of the fair when he drives the wooden tap into a barrel of beer and proclaims O'zapft is! ("It's tapped!"). The festival was moved from the Original October  marriage celebration for better weather to celebrate in the last two weeks of September.

Oktoberfest Celebration at a HB House
Traditions in the Oktoberfest festival include the Costume and Riflemen's Procession on the first Sunday of the festival, in which some 7000 performers combined in groups with traditional costumes and historical uniforms, marching bands, riflemen, thoroughbred horses and other livestock, old-fashioned carriages, and numerous floats -- parade through the streets of Munich's city center showcasing the diversity of local, regional, and national customs. The second Sunday of the Oktoberfest features an open-air big band concert involving approximately 400 musicians who comprise all of the Oktoberfest bands. Oktoberfest is celebrated around the world and many still have the keg tapping, traditional dances, music, food, beer, wine, schnapps so that family and friends can celebrate the fall. You won't see the keg tapping, traditional dance, lederhosen or dyrndls; but you will see great music, food, beer, wine and a fall celebration with family and friends.
