Snowshoeing and Cross-country Skiing

Ellicottville and Cattaragus County have acres of snow shoeing and cross country skiing trails open in the winter. Each area has its own majestic scenery and is worth the trip. At Holiday Valley Resort, there are 5km on 2 trails that overlook the great valley. The Red House area at the top of Summit hill, in Allegany State Park, has miles of trails rolling through acres of trees, lakes and wildlife. Explore these areas and let us know what you find!

Snow Shoeing

Holiday Valley Resort

Anyone can hike up to Spruce lake from Holiday Valley Resort and access the trails and ridge on top of the resort hills. Hike up the access road just past the Tannenbaum lodge. Follow the blue flag trail to the right of the Spruce Lake lift, to the right of the tree line. Follow the trail up the mountain. The trail will cross and follow the maintenance roads. When you see the white water tower on your left, head down that road. you will see a clearing the right just before the tower with more blue blazes. Keep heading up the mountain. You will eventually join the maintenance road again. At this point, you can see the bowl surrounding Spruce lake. You can cross below the bowl or head up to the lake ridge. You can explore around the lake ridge. Do NOT walk on the lake. The lake does not freeze since they use it to feed the snow making guns. Either way you will head left towards the Spruce lake lift to access the white trail. Follow the signs to the Cross Country trail to Tannenbaum. At the second sign on your right, follow the cross country trail for 10 feet. You should see some white blazes painted on the trees. Follow this trail until you reach the communications tower. Head around the town to your right. About half way to 3/4 way around, you will see a path that will access the blue trail again. Follow the trail as long as you like. It will take you across the Holiday Valley Resort ridge. You will see other trial blazes and you can also walk the cross country trails. Enjoy and you common sense hiking safety rules.

You can also take the maintenance road to the right of the Spruce Lake lift all the way to the top of Spruce lake, once your are on it. The maintenance road can also be accessed from a dead at the end of the main road leading to Holiday Valley Resort. Keep in mind that the road is not well maintained and there is no parking. There are plenty of ridge areas to hike up through the forest; however, use caution for creeks / streams, rocks and other hazards.

The Holiday Valley Resort staff in the rental office can recommend some great trails and areas to explore on the resort property.
